Food in general

General Red-lored Amazon eating

I recommend a balanced parrot cooking mix, like SAM Cooking Mix, which is a balanced diet for parrots. With this you can give a variety of seeds, fresh fruit and vegetables. Use the Basic Food Mix below as your parrot's everyday food, instead of a bowl of parrot mix, that consists mainly of sunflower seed and peanuts!

Put it's fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy treats in a separate bowl.

ALWAYS ensure that it has fresh clean water.

(See Feeding your chick for more specific feeding requirements of chicks up to 12 weeks old.)

For the specific diet of a particular species, read their prescribed diet.

Basic Food Mix

1 Heaped tablespoon cooking mix (cooked)

1 Heaped tablespoon of Avid-plus Complete Breeder pellets or Avi-plus Maintenance pellets

1 Teaspoon Sunflower seed

1 Teaspoon mixed fine seed

Mix together and feed 2x a day to your parrot. Adjust the measures to suit your parrot's dietary needs.

Nuts

Peanuts are not nuts! and a lot of it is not very healthy for your parrot. You can give them a few (2 – 4) peanuts a week, but it is better to feed nuts like almonds and pecan nuts.
